This never-reprinted rootin'-tootin' action-packed adventure from Atlas' Quick-Trigger Western #18 (1957) was penciled and inked by pioneering Black artist Matt Baker!

Though many associate him only with beautiful women like the voluptuous Phantom Lady

or the protagonists of love stories

...the guy could produce high-adventure, kick-butt material when given the chance!

And we're giving him the chance, this month!

Romance on the Range COWGIRL ROMANCES "Men Died for My Kisses!"

It's been a while since we've run a romance comic...

...and it's almost Valentine's Day, so we looked through the archives for the most sensational story title we could find!

This 1950 one-shot from Atlas Comics is either #1 (if you go by the cover numbering) or #28 (if you go by the indicia on the inside cover).

The #28 indicates it's a continuation of Jeanie Comics, a teen humor title which ended two months earlier with #27.

As for why it's a one-shot, it seems rival Fiction House released their own Cowgirl Romances simultaneously...or just before...Atlas.

Fiction House's title continued for 11 more issues while Atlas' book disappeared after this one appearance.

Neither the writer or artist(s) are known.

Fun fact: Atlas released six different Western romance titles in the early 50s, more than any other comics company...

CoronaVirus Cowboy Comics KID COLT COMICS "Black Rider in Face to Face with Death!"

Probably the only masked Western hero to be a medical doctor in his secret identity...

...a secret the mysterious Black Rider used to his advantage in this never-reprinted story from Atlas' Kid Colt Outlaw Comics #38 (1954)!

Illustrated by Joe Kubert, this tale of infection among Indians has an unknown author due to lack of credits in the pre-Marvel Atlas Comics!.

WESTERN OUTLAWS & SHERIFFS "El Sombro! Mexico's Ghost of Chapel Hill"

We're doing a combo Halloween / Dia de los Muertos post...

 ...featuring a Ghost Rider/Masked Marvel-style hero with a Mexican twist!

Despite the references, there was no real-life El Sombro!
The unknown writer for this tale from Atlas' Western Outlaws and Sheriffs #62 (1950) made the tale up!
The art's a bit problematic.
The splash page is by Joe Maneely, and the rest of the tale is attributed to penciler John Buscema and an unknown inker.
Personally, I have my doubts.

When the tale was reprinted in Marvel's Rawhide Kid #100 (1972), El Sombro received a makeover...

...with a revision of his color scheme (or original lack therof)!

In the interim, Marvel had produced a rebooted version of the 1950s Ghost Rider (including his all-white color scheme)...

 ... who was still appearing as a guest-star in various Marvel Old West titles.

Perhaps the editors thought the audience would confuse the two characters!
