Weird West ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Claws of Horror!"

No More Fake Ghost Riders!
Here's the Real Deal...
...in hand-to-claw action against a flying demon..or is that demoness?
Penciled by Dick Ayers, inked by Ernie Bache and likely scripted by Gardner Fox, this never-reprinted story from Magazine Enterprises' Tim Holt #30 (1952) was typical of the "Haunted Horseman's" exploits, though there were a couple of tales involving the supernatural, which we already ran HERE and HERE!

ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Talking Head!"

It wasn't just cowboys and owlhoots who preyed upon peoples' superstitions and fears in the Weird West!
Native Americans also took advantage of them!
Penciled by co-creator Dick Ayers and inked by Ernie Bache, this tale from Magazine Enterprises' Best of the West #4 (1952) wasn't the only time the baddie was a Native American, nor the only time the evildoer was a woman!
In the Old West (as well as today), crime was an equal-opportunity business!

ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Spirit Spurs"

Our Halloween journey through the Weird West continues...

...with the frontier's first masked "mystical" manhunter...who now faces a monster!
As this never-reprinted tale from Magazine Enterprises' Ghost Rider #10 (1952) shows, the Ghost Rider wasn't the only person to prey upon superstitious settlers' fears!
You should note the sheriff is extremely-skeptical about such creatures...and doesn't consider GR to be supernatural, even after his "escape"!

ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Freaks of Fear!"

When the star of the comic you're guest-starring in gives you the cover spot...

...you know you've got a tale that's something special!

Penciled by co-creator Dick Ayers and inked by Ernie Bache, this never-reprinted (in color) tale from Magazine Enterprises' Bobby Benson's B-Bar-B Riders #15 (1952) was the last of a three-issue run as a secondary feature to boost sales on the title.
In fact, they even tried adding horror elements to the lead feature...

...which wasn't very successful!
This was while the Ghost Rider was appearing both in his own comic and the anthology title Best of the West which also featured the Durango Kid, Tim Holt/RedMask, and Straight Arrow, all of whom had their own books!
Trivia: The B-Bar-B Riders comic was based on a Mutual Network radio series that ran from 1948 to 1955.

Countdown to Halloween 2016: ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Beautiful Witch"

...we're going with a confusing Dick Ayers-illustrated cover that intros us to a never-reprinted tale...
Like most of the Ghost Rider-starring tales, this one from Magazine Enterprises' Ghost Rider #11 (1953) features both a hero and villains pretending to be supernatural beings.
(This one did feature real zombies, and the retelling of his origin featured the ghosts of famous Westerners...who weren't in the first version!)
Ironically, the backup "Tales of the Ghost Rider" feature almost always featured supernatural events!
Illustrated by Dick Ayers and Ernie Bache, the writer, unfortunately, is unknown.
We hope you've enjoyed our posts for the Countdown to Halloween 2016 Blogathon and hope you'll come back to visit as we return to monthly posting.

Countdown to Halloween 2016: ORIGINAL GHOST RIDER "Devil Deals in Death!"

...set in the same fictional universe.
This week, the title character himself takes the reins...
As in most cases, there's no actual supernatural element in the tale, just bad guys (and the Ghost Rider) using the technology of the time to simulate magical events!
This particular tale from Magazine Enterprises' Ghost Rider #12 (1953) is one of several to feature Satan/Devil/Lucifer impersonators, but the only one to feature a one-eyed Devil!
It's an extremely-impractical disguise for anyone to use, since the "eye" in the mask itself isn't useable to see out of, nor is it likely to look realistic enough to fool anyone!
Did artists Dick Ayers and Ernie Bache or the unknown writer just do it to make this impersonator visually-distinctive?
We'll never know...
