"The Cisco Kid was a Friend of Mine..."

The Cisco Kid was the first Hispanic multi-media superstar, featured in books, movies, radio, comic books, newspaper strips, and eventually, television, predating Zorro in each media (except Zorro never had a radio show)!

As created by legendary writer O Henry, in the short story "The Caballero's Way" in 1907. the Kid was neither Hispanic nor a hero!
A 1914 silent movie of "The Caballero's Way" altered the character to the version that's became famous...a wandering hero, called "The Robin Hood of the Old West", who, with his sidekick, righted wrongs without killing (but with lots and LOTS of shooting) just like the Lone Ranger!
Over two dozen more films followed, as well as a long-running radio series, a newspaper strip, several comic book series, and a 156-episode tv show famous for being the FIRST American tv series filmed in color!
Some of the films and tv series episodes are on dvd.
Note that not all dvds have color tv episodes, some have have b/w versions!

In the 1990s, Jimmy Smits and Cheech Marin starred in a very well-done tv-movie pilot for a new series that, unfortunately, wasn't picked up (but is available on dvd).
But, there's talk of a new big-budget film version of the character sometime in the next couple of years!

HOW THE WEST WAS FUN! "Crisco Keed"

Probably the last place you'd find a Western story would be a Three Stooges comic...

...yet here it is, from St John's Three Stooges #7 (1954)!

This never-reprinted spoof of the Cisco Kid was written and illustrated by William Overgard in a funky Harvey Kurtzman/Will Elder style and was probably meant for St John's MAD-clone title WHACK!.

But, WHACK! had been canceled in May, 1954.

So the story ended up in the final issue of Three Stooges, published in October, 1954!

PANCHO VILLA "Tiger of the North"

Continuing the historically-suspect (but entertaining) adventures of...

...Pancho Villa from his own, never-reprinted, 1950 one-shot comic book!

Both writer and artist are unknown.
The final story (which features his death) will be re-presented here in July!

PANCHO VILLA "Scourge of the Rurales"

Yeah, I know Cinquo de Mayo was last Saturday...

...but we publish on Mondays, so here's a belated tribute to one of Mexico's most famous historical figures...

This was the first story from a one-shot Pancho Villa book published in 1950 by Avon Comics.
We have no idea how historically-accurate it is.
Both writer and artist are unknown.
There are two more short stories covering other periods of Villa's life.
None has ever been reprinted, but they will be re-presented here in the next few months!

CISCO KID "Gunwise Cowpoke"

From #2 of his own comic (which was actually the first issue)...

...comes the "Robin Hood of the Old West", as they said on his radio show!

Even though the last few b-movies had starred Duncan Renaldo and the tv series (also starring Renaldo) was about to begin airing when this issue came out, Cisco in this issue looks remarkably like Gilbert Roland, who played him in several b-movies in the mid-1940s, indicating that this story may have been created back then, but not published until 1951.

In the next issue, Cisco shaves off his mustache and begins to look more like Renaldo.
